An argument for physical over digital media

Streaming services are far cheaper than cable, have large libraries of both recent shows and films and classics, and can be viewed anywhere there is a signal. As services like Netflix have risen, businesses like Blockbuster fell, and DVD sales have dropped by 86% in the past 13 years. Why purchase something that you may already be paying for, or at least can buy immediately to watch? Many consumers are unaware of the advantages of physical media (...) [Artigo Completo]

You had me at hello!

"Some people collect Beanie Babies. Others, rare coins. For Vancouverite Rob Feller, it's VHS copies of a 1996 Tom Cruise movie he's never seen. "[People] think I'm crazy — and that's not far off the mark," Feller said from his home in the West End. Over the past eight years, Feller has led a small group of friends to collect 456 copies of the blockbuster hit Jerry Maguire and donate them to the Los Angeles-based video and performance collective Everything Is Terrible! Feller is their top "Jerry" collector in Canada. He says the hunt for Jerry Maguire tapes is a fun challenge. He's also keen to contribute to the collective's goal for the tapes: to use them as building blocks for a giant pyramid in the U.S. desert." [CBC]

José Alves da Silva

DVDs and Blu-rays are here to stay

"Streaming? Downloadable content? Pah! The future is definitely physical media. Here is a rundown on why physical media is still alive and kicking and what you are still able to get for your money. In my opinion, streaming will only be the future if there becomes a way to have films exist online forever, and not removed after a certain period." [The Digital Fix]

We Can’t Let Physical Media Die

"Samsung recently announced that they won’t be making any more Blu-ray players for the US market (...) this development is yet another blow to the long-term survival of physical media. (...) Blu-rays and DVDs aren’t going to disappear overnight. That said, if we want to keep physical around then we need to support it. Maybe you prefer streaming and purchasing digital copies for whatever reason, but movies and shows existing on these platforms relies on them sticking around and hosting them. Neither is guaranteed. But a tangible disc on your shelf will always be there, provided you take good care of it." [FilmSchoolRejects]

E agora, o que faço?

"Now, the first batch of CDs produced are starting to fall victim to what is known as "disc rot". Disk rot is what occurs when a CD or DVD suffers oxidisation on the reflective layer, a condition previously only seen in disks using faulty dyes or adhesives. But now we are starting to see the deterioration occur in your average well-made disks within 20 years, as reported by cdm. It's not like we can put a definitive timeline on how long CDs last though - the United States of America's Library of Congress conducted a large-scale study in 2009 that showed some disks will be readable into the 28th Century. The average lifespan of a CD came in at 776 years, but some come in at under 25 years - and those are the ones that are starting to fail, or "rot" now. So how do you preserve the data? Put them in the fridge. The Library of Congress study concluded that 5 degrees C and 30 per cent relative humidity is the best condition to keep your CDs operational for at least 500 years."
