The Death of Dick Long (2019)

It's A24's Fargo with a touch of Pink Freud and Cicciolina. It feels unique, and even with some character and rhythm flaws, it works really well as a serene blend of genres. And I bet you didn't know this is actually based on a true story - just google Kenneth Pinyan.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)

Most of the jokes are great - Professor X meets Mr Monopoly, the backstage pass to Limp Bizkit or the one with Vin Diesel and The Rock as a punchline among the wittiest -, all the CGI related to Sonic, Knuckles and Tails is absolutely flawless - who would have said after that infamous initial trailer for the first movie -, Natasha Rothwell was hysterically funny and Jim Carrey did clearly enjoy playing Robotnik on evil ecstasy. A bunch of game related homages - Sonic loosing the rings, Tails flying a red aeroplane or those lovely end credits - and the promise of a third movie with Shadow as the antagonist. All good except that Transformeresque third act with a bit too much computer animated boring fighting against the Giant Eggman. Just give us more of Sonic talking and less of him brawling.

Christine (1983)

I know this sounds crazy, but "Christine" is actually my favorite Carpenter. Underrated at so many levels, it's a possession movie as much as a coming of age story. It's not scary - nor meant to be -, but does an awesome job in building up all its horror elements together with an amazing performance by Keith Gordon, believable not only as a goon but also throughout the various stages of his growing obsession with Christine. Love the soundtrack - so many Rock n' Roll oldies - and just wished all the deaths could have been a little more "explicit".

True Spirit (2023)

It's the most Netflix movie Netflix ever made. Based on the incredible true story of Jessica Watson, one i found out some years ago watching the then unknown documentary 210 Days – Around The World With Jessica Watson. I bet/hope that a lot of people will discover it now. PS: If you're wondering, Ben Bryant is a fictional character - remember, the most Netflix movie Netflix ever made - inspired by a whole team of people who helped Jessica train and prepare for the trip.

The Replacement Killers (1998)

Antoine Fuqua is no John Woo, but Chow Yun-fat is so amazing in all his action scenes that he almost made Fuqua go through passport control as an asian director. Great sliding scene below a car stopped with a gun against the floor, upside down freaking cool shot of a dying cop, a movie theater shootout, sexy tear in the eye Mira Sorvino and Danny Trejo with an all stretched soft face without a single wrinkle - except in his last scene. Now that's some great special effects. And yes, I wasn't ready for Michael Rooker playing a good guy.

Alien³ (1992)

According to an ancient legend, the production of Alien³ was so chaotic that at one point, David Fincher was denied permission by the film's producers to shoot a crucial scene in the infirmary between Ripley and the Alien. That's how messy the final outcome was. Terrible VFX, making this look older and more dated than the original Alien in the late seventies. Saved only by the brave, iconic and heroic finale.

Darkest Hour (2017)

Winston Churchill is definitely one of the most intriguing and riveting political characters of the last century and Gary Oldman give us an outstanding performance in his shoes. That being said, Joe Wright's movie could hardly be more unexciting and monotonous. No point whatsoever in Lily James character and wasteful underexploitation of his relationship with Clementine Churchill. Reports have been given that Oldman's back is still in pain of carrying this movie everywhere in 2017/8.

Pamela, A Love Story (2023)

So Stallone offered Pam "a condo and a Porsche" in exchange for her to become his "No. 1 girl". You naughty Rambo. My 90's were all about her, from Baywatch to V.I.P., that tunnel sex scene in Raw Justice to her "Word Up" intro in Barb Wire, hidden Playboy magazines in my school backpack to the infamous sex tapes that took days to download on ISDN internet connections. Duplicate downloads, as my father was just as interested as i was. Long live Pam, will always remember her fondly!

The Graduate (1967)

A classic one, mainly for capturing the cultural zeitgeist - sexuality and religion wise - of the sixties and launching Hoffman's career. But damn, had huge problems with all the holes around Ben and Elaine's relationship... it just strained believability to the breaking point. But anyway, loved Nichols creativity and loved Simon & Garfunkel replacing a lot of needless dialogues. And here's to you, Mrs. Robinson!

The Hateful Eight (2015)

I'll take as much Tarantino as I can get. It's Reservoir Dogs - one big room, everyone together - made into an Western and i freaking loved every second of it. Even if i felt by the end that its script could have been better, bolder and (more) brutal. Btw, can we already say that someone getting shot in the balls is already a Tarantino trademark? Outstanding acting from everyone, especially from Jennifer Jason Leigh and Samuel L. Jackson.

CIA as the bad guys that rule the world, FBI as the good ones who don't know shit about anything relevant. Worst mushroom cloud special effects ever. Michael Shannon as a truck driver. Morgan Freeman trying not to laugh every time he has to face Keanu's acting. Rachel Weisz already looking mid thirties in her early twenties - as she still does today in her fifties. BTW, check her Letterboxd bio for a funny date related trivia. Miss Fred Ward!

Ex-Rental (2019)

Short documentary that explores three australian video rental stores, all in different stages of operation - one closed for good (CIVIC), one about to close / liquidation (Blockbuster) and the other one (Video Ezy) still fighting to stay alive. Sad to discover that Video Ezy didn't survive Covid and became defunct in 2021. Sound quality on the interviews wasn't the best (specially on CIVIC and Blockbuster), but hey, it was worth the shot. Some really relevant takes on what made streaming platforms so widely accepted: it's not content related, but a matter of easy accessibility. You can be on a bus, on an airplane or tucked at your bed at night, one smartphone or tablet away from it. You just can't fight that. Available for free here.

The River Wild (1994)

River rafting trip gone awry. Meryl Streep gives a strong performance as the lead character, a skilled rafter and determined mother who must use her expertise and resourcefulness to protect her family from assholes Kevin Bacon and John C. Reilly. Well-crafted action scenes, breathtaking scenic locations, one-dimensional villains and somewhat predictable plot. Love David Strathairn!

Alien Resurrection (1997)

Who do I have to fuck to get off this boat? É pateta, mas definitivamente mais memorável e divertido que o predecessor realizado por David Fincher. Uma mão cheia de ideias parvas - Ripley resgatada para um regresso improvável como um clone, piratas do espaço e um Alien gigantesco com maminhas misturado com ADN humano, filho de Ripley - que acabam por, sabe-se lá como, encaixar num todo coeso que funciona entre cenas subaquáticas, robôs inesperados e agressões testiculares com bolas de basquetebol. Sigourney Weaver que nunca aceitaria regressar para um quarto capítulo até oferecerem-lhe uma fortuna - onze milhões de dólares -, Ron Perlman quase a bater a bota numa cena debaixo de água, Winona Ryder bonita para xuxu e a última vez que Jean-Pierre Jeunet meteu os pés em Hollywood, tamanhas as restrições em aplicar livremente o seu imaginário visual e estilístico. Ainda assim, bem melhor do que a encomenda.

Barbarian (2022)

Facilmente um dos mais cativantes filmes de terror do ano passado, "Barbarian" apresenta-se com um primeiro acto absolutamente fenomenal na forma como subverte constantemente as expectativas - sacana do Bill Skarsgård tem cara de malandrão - e agarra a audiência ao sofá. Tensão alta com a surpreendente Georgina Campbell no comando, complementada de forma inesperada e interessante por um segundo acto aparentemente desconexo e mais leve - desta vez é Justin Long que tem pinta de brincalhão -, mas que se revela, afinal, como uma peça fundamental do puzzle para contextualizar e justificar todo o estranho novo mundo subterrâneo com que fomos presenteados. Infelizmente o terceiro e último acto deixa-se enrolar numa espiral de decisões tomadas por várias personagens - das "vítimas" aos policias - pouco credíveis, ao mesmo tempo que a faceta de terror banaliza-se para uma esfera muito mais palpável e banal, vista e revista inúmeras vezes no género. Ainda assim, nada que estrague a experiência no seu todo, ainda para mais com uma cinematografia sofisticada digna de destaque. E eis o porquê de ainda não estar registado no AirBNB.

Breaking Down Carlito's Way

The Delta Force (1986)

Lee Marvin e Robert Forster a partilhar a tela com Chuck Norris e Steve James; só isso já justificava o preço do bilhete. Uma freira que quer ir para o céu; só não quer é voar nele, nem com o padre do George Kennedy ao lado. Um avião comercial com destino a Nova Iorque sequestrado por libaneses logo após a descolagem de Atenas e todo um contexto motivacional político e religioso muito mais denso do que seria de esperar num filme de acção da Canon. Para muitos terá funcionado - é uma das obras mais reconhecíveis da lendária produtora no reinado do israelita Golan -, mas para mim acaba por ser essa semi intelectualização rudimentar e inesperada que desvirtua o caminho explosivo natural que o filme realizado pelo próprio Golan devia ter seguido muito mais cedo, roubando-lhe demasiado tempo nos primeiros dois actos para se perder em incontáveis chamadas telefónicas estratégicas e tácticas amorfas de espionagem - o padre barbudo e o seu confessionário ou botijas de oxigénio amarelas florescentes, quando o objectivo era a camuflagem na noite escura. Quando finalmente arranca para a batalha palpável entre o "bem e o mal", entre os americanos e todos os outros, entre o Chuck Norris numa mota com mísseis e terroristas sem dois dedos de testa, cumpre os mínimos. Sempre de mota, que há que aproveitar o gadget.

American Ninja 2: The Confrontation (1987)

Steve James proibido de vestir a tshirt; Michael Dudikoff proibido de a despir - fora de forma amigo? Uma ilha nas Caraíbas, traficantes de droga e ninjas a dar com um pau. Fuzileiros a desaparecerem de forma inexplicável, quase tão inexplicável como a quantidade de casacos porreiros que o Dudikoff veste ao longo desta sequela. Uma panóplia de cenas de acção inesperadamente competentes e criativas - como a do arrastão pela estrada fora que termina numa bruta explosão - e o Steve James constantemente a disparar one liners irresistíveis, seja em paz ou em guerra. É ele a grande estrela desta sequela, mesmo que seja Dudikoff a vestir a pele de protagonista com as melhores cenas de pancadaria, lançamento de shurikens ou defesa romântica de uma donzela em apuros. Porque nada como ver o Rambo negro no engate para nos animar o dia. Esperemos apenas que a ideia de um Super Ninja construído em laboratório, astuto, inteligente e malvado, com tendões de aço leve e velocidade de atleta olímpico, o assassino mais letal que o mundo já conheceu, não tenha morrido aqui. Vou ali espreitar o terceiro e já volto!

Bloodsport (1988)

Lutadores a partir cubos gigantes de gelo com os cotovelos ou cocos com palmadas. Van Damme, super penteadinho e ainda sem o famoso galo na cabeça, um capitão do exército norte-americano especialista a desaparecer de chuveiros. O pior actor criança da história da humanidade - o que faz de Frank Dux novinho - e a famosa espargata usada vezes sem conta: ora forçada por cordas, qual Cristo belga de robe branco, ora entre cadeiras, ora em combate, ora cénica e espiritual com Hong Kong como pano de fundo, ora aérea, ora de cuequinha vermelha. Calma, estou a brincar, temos cuequinha vermelha naquelas belas nalgas de Bruxelas, mas sem direito a espargata. Forest Whitaker tão novinho que ainda conseguia correr e um realizador misterioso de pala no olho, qual Raoul Walsh que ninguém sabe quem foi. Combates tão teatrais que os fãs de cinema asiático de artes marciais encaixam este "Bloodsport" nas prateleiras dedicadas à comédia nas suas casas - prova disso, o golpe final que derrota o mítico Chong Li é um pontapé rotativo de helicóptero... quatro vezes seguidas -, mas toda uma mitologia que continua a sobreviver tão bem ao fardo do tempo, seja pelo torneio Kumite, qual Fight Club do qual ninguém pode falar, pela banda sonora irresistível ou pelas caretas de Jean Claude. Trinta anos sem ver isto e ainda me lembrava daquele tijolo que partia por baixo. Volto daqui a trinta, está prometido!

De longe o melhor trabalho de João Gonzalez, o primeiro em que consegue alinhar o seu estilo peculiar e muito competente de animação com uma história repleta de coração e sentimento. Não é preciso uma palavra para percebermos e sentirmos tudo o que estas personagens nos querem dizer, para vivenciarmos o luto que atravessam, para sermos catapultados pela beleza simbólica da sua cena final. Visualmente deslumbrante... mas são aquelas boinas e aqueles abraços que nos conquistam.
