The cinematography is in fact admirable - that german expressionism look all around and that underwater shot of "mummy" that is undoubtfully one for the ages - but the pacing is highly uneven and most of the characters' decisions are borderline laughable as they have no coherency and consistency along the narrative. At the end, I felt that the false prophet preacher killer played by Robert Mitchum was more a silly cartoon of a serial killer than a real threat. Can't get the hype of it.
