
It was undoubtedly groundbreaking in so many technical aspects, mainly with Lang’s innovative use of (recent) sound and with some really interesting visual camera and narrative tricks to amplify tension. The way the whistle works as a substitute to the murderer's face and presence - just like Spielberg did with Jaws - was just phenomenal. Is it a perfect movie by today's eyes? Maybe not. But taking in account it was made almost a century ago, M surely remains a timeless reflection on crime, guilt, and the mechanisms of (mob) justice, as relevant in today's culture as it was in pre-fascist Germany.
